Kate Middleton managed a constant stream of sunny smiles in the pouring rain yesterday on her final official public appearance as a single girl.

William and Kate – who stood almost as tall as her 6ft-plus fiance thanks to the high heels she stubbornly kept on despite the mud – were presented with a ‘Courting Cake’ before they left.
The gift, a tradition in some parts of Lancashire, is normally baked by a bride-to-be and given to her betrothed as a token of love, care and friendship following their courtship.
The heart-shaped cake contained two layers of shortbread with a raspberry jam centre and was topped with their names in icing.
